چکیده

This work discloses similarity properties of a high aspect ratio pulsating jet with lateral confinement exhibiting axis switching in a region close to the jet exit. The analysis is conducted separately within the major and minor planes of the jet source. The similarity relations derived from the in-plane flow equations are combined with experimental data collected in a recent threedimensional velocimetry study of a glottal-like jet. Empirically non-collapsing profiles are shown to rescale as collapsing profiles in the similarity variables within ranges of the streamwise coordinate that are determined by the analysis. The similarity properties are shown to be useful to make predictions on the jet axis switching characteristics.

A computational study of asymmetric glottal jet deflection during phonation.

Two-dimensional numerical simulations are used to explore the mechanism for asymmetric deflection of the glottal jet during phonation. The model employs the full Navier-Stokes equations for the flow but a simple laryngeal geometry and vocal-fold motion. The study focuses on the effect of Reynolds number and glottal opening angle with a particular emphasis on examining the importance of the so-c...

A model of glottal flow incorporating viscous-inviscid interaction

A model of flow passing through the glottis is presented by employing the boundary-layer assumption. A thin boundary layer near the glottal wall influences the flow behavior in terms of the flow separation, jet formation, and pressure distribution along the channel. The integral momentum relation has been developed to analyze the boundary layer accurately, and it can be solved numerically for t...

Glottal motion and its impact on the respiratory flow.

Advantages of inhaled therapies as a priori targeted supply of drugs make them particularly convenient for the treatment of lung diseases. Nevertheless, several physical and anatomical factors can largely influence treatment efficiency. In particular, upper airways (UA) anatomic arrangement acts as an unwanted filter, which limits the amount of drug delivered to the lung [5]. More specifically,...

Direct-numerical simulation of the glottal jet and vocal-fold dynamics in a three-dimensional laryngeal model.

An immersed-boundary method based flow solver coupled with a finite-element solid dynamics solver is employed in order to conduct direct-numerical simulations of phonatory dynamics in a three-dimensional model of the human larynx. The computed features of the glottal flow including mean and peak flow rates, and the open and skewness quotients are found to be within the normal physiological rang...

A three-dimensional study of the glottal jet

This work builds upon the efforts to characterize the three-dimensional features of the glottal jet during vocal fold vibration. The study uses a Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry setup on a self-oscillating physical model of the vocal folds with a uniform vocal tract. Time averages are documented and compared against observations reported for jets exiting elongated nozzles. Phase average...
